The class had a great time during the Halloween parade and class party. Thank you to Mrs. Biedron, Mrs. Dawson, Mrs. Grund, and Mrs. Penz for leading the fun activities. Thank you also to Mr. Bhattacharjee for taking so many photos of the class. I can't wait to see what moments you captured. I hope everyone had a safe a fun evening full of trick or treating and family fun!
Today Mrs. Impastato joined the class to work on a very important topic. We discussed the difference between tattling and telling. The biggest difference is that tattling is to get someone into trouble and telling is to get someone out of trouble. This is an important difference that the class is working on recognizing. Feel free to view the video we watched in class today. Today the class enjoyed their first day of math explorations. Thank you Mrs. Dawson, Mrs. Penz, Mr. Ramirez, and Mrs. Ruhl for leading the different activities. The students practiced skills we have been working on, and got to explore new skills we will focus on as the year continues.
They measured pumpkins and determined if they could float, they played a memory game with tallies, money, and addition, they rolled dice and wrote tallies, completed a ten frame, and wrote the number, and they practiced adding and subtracting on a number grid. When students weren't working with the parents, they were using the computers to work independently on Dreambox. I checked in with the different groups and saw great engagement! I think it was a very successful first day of explorations. The students seemed to enjoy themselves and I hope the parents did to. This is such a fun way for the students to explore different materials and practice their skills. Today we had a special visit from the Arlington Heights Smooke Truck. We began by watching a short video of Timon and Pumba from The Lion King. The class learned what to do if there is a fire. Ask your child one thing they learned. Some students decided they were uncomfortable participating in the practice evacuation so we went outside and watched the rest of the class escape the smoke. I tried to snap photos during the practice evaluation but didn't get everyone. The class has been working to fill our behavior jar and this morning they did it! They have met their goal to fill our jar and have earned a pajama day for tomorrow. They can wear pajamas if they would like and also they may bring one stuffed animal.
This is the same information that was sent home as a letter on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.
Next Monday, Oct. 24th, the Arlington Heights Fire Department will be visiting Windsor School. October is Fire Safety month, and they will be bringing the smoke house with them to help our students practice fire safety. According to the fire department, there are signs in the trailer advising people with asthma to not participate in the excercise. The children are allowed to participate in the smoke house, up until the fire fighter introduces the simulated smoke product into the environment. These children will then exit the smoke house and wait for the rest of their classmates to finish, allowing them to participate as fully as possible with the exception of breathing in the simulated smoke. If you DO NOT wish for your child to participate in the simulated "smoke" portion of the experience, please let me know by Friday, Oct. 21st. There are some upcoming events that I don't want you to forget about.
1. If you have not already completed and returned the Halloween lunch form, please do so. We need to know who is staying and who is leaving during lunch on Halloween to ensure all students are accounted for. If you need another form, please email me or have your child ask me for another one. I will make extra copies for those who ask. 2. If you would like to order Scholastic books this month, I will be placing the class order on Friday, October 28. The website is: clubs.scholastic.com/home Our class code is: PHQB2 3. Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on November 21st and 22nd. If you have not already signed up, please do so by clicking the link below which will take you directly to the sign up page. http://tinyurl.com/zrd5da5 The class has been learning about different genres. We have been focusing mostly on fiction and nonfiction. This morning I challenged each student in class to state one thing about fiction and/or nonfiction. It was extremely open ended but I thought they could do it. Their responses were all on topic, some more specific than others, but all were great answers.
Some provided basic reasons such as fiction tells a story and nonfiction tells facts. Others provided more specific examples such as the student who said there are two types of fiction, realistic fiction and fantasy. I am very impressed with the knowledge the class posses regarding genres. They are taking in what is being taught and I hope they share their knowledge with you at home! Sometimes you just need to take a break. The class has been working so hard that they needed to take a short movement break. I snapped some pictures, but couldn't get a good video. They were jumping and moving for about three minutes. Just enough time to get out their energy and get ready to learn math at the end of the day. |
