I tried to capture some moments from our math explorations in November, but had some technical difficulties. This month we were joined by Mrs. Eshoo, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Grund, and Mrs. Dikshit. The students engaged in some great hands on activities. They used the calculators, which proved to be quite a challenge. They used pattern blocks to create and complete patterns. The students also used the dominos to determine if the numbers were even or odd. They also practiced number sequencing with the number grid. Thank you to the mothers who joined us to help the students expand their knowledge of these valuable topics.
The class did a great job of coming in and getting right to work this morning. As we typically do, they started their Monday by writing about the event(s) of their weekend. It was awesome to see their writing this morning compared to the first Monday of first grade. I can't wait to show you their work during conferences.
During our time in the library, the class participated in a fun activity to practice learning the Dewey Decimal System. The students learned where each type of nonfiction book is located in the library. Ask your child about it! This afternoon Mrs. Stella joined us again to work on another goal setting lesson. The students used Legos with only four minutes to build. It was difficult to do this with no time to plan. They reflected on their work, or lack of, in the short time they were given. After a whole class discussion, the students were given time to plan together before building again. Their second attempts were much more successful than their first. Planning is really important! Hopefully this is something we will continue to work on. If we want to do something, we should set a goal. It's okay if we can't do something yet, hopefully we will learn. Thank you for the Scholastic book orders that have placed. You are helping us grow the classroom library with the extra points I earn from your personal purchases. Today was a very busy day in our classroom. After the Veterans Breakfast this morning the students lined the hallways to wave flags and wave to our Veterans. The students did a great job and I think everyone enjoyed it.
This afternoon we were visited by our tech captains and our student council representatives. Our tech captains reminded the students of the rules about using technology at school. The students signed a contract saying they would follow these important rules. -Teachers set bookmarks, settings, and preferences, so I will leave them alone. -I will only login, move, delete, or work on my own files and folders. -I will use technology only for tasks my teacher has assigned to focus on learning. -I will inform my teacher if someone is using technology inappropriately. Our student council representatives told us about an exciting upcoming event. On Friday, November 18 the school will have a Sports Day. All students are encourage to wear something that represents their favorite team. They can wear a jersey from their own sports team if they want. We reviewed reading clocks during math today. Practice at home if you would like. We have been focusing on telling time to the hour and half hour. See if they can help you determine the time at home. The students ended the day working in groups on the computers and iPads. Much of the time we use technology in the classroom the instruction is guided by the teacher. Today they were given the opportunity to explore the applications and websites listed on the LMC website. windsorlmc.weebly.com/online-learning-links.html Today Mrs. Stella joined our class for a lesson on the "Power of Yet." The class created a list of all the things they like to do and are good at doing at school. After making this list, they brainstormed things they don't know how to do yet. The class came up with thoughtful ideas. They then each chose one thing they wanted to learn how to do. Ask your child what they want to learn how to do at school.
These are posted in the room and can be seen during conferences. Check out the video Mrs. Stella shared with the class. It i's a good reminder of how important it is to set goals and know that even if we can't do something now, we may be able to do it in the future. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLeUvZvuvAs Today Mrs. Komarek and Mrs. Corley came to our classroom for our weekly technology lesson. The class learned about and used the app "pic collage kids" to take and find photos of living and nonliving things. They had lots of fun photographing each other.
They did a great job demonstrating their understanding of our current science unit. The students worked in pairs and had to work together to do their best work. Check out their work in the slideshow Mrs. Corley created. www.photosnack.com/A75DE77EFB5/whatislivingandnonlivingbymrsrichmondsclass.html |
